Caffeine And Osteoporosis - Do We Have To Give Up Our Java?

Most experts recommend that we limit our caffeine to 300-400 mg. a day...which is approximately 3 cups (not mugs) of coffee daily. But coffee is rarely served in 8 ounce cups (237ml) and not all coffee is created equal.

Calcium Magnesium

According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, 1 in 3 women over age 50 and 1 in 2 over age 60 will suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis. Men suffer at a reduced rate of 1 in 5 over age 50...and 1 in 3 over age 60 will experience a fracture.

Calcium Magnesium

Calcium absorption into the bones is essential for healthy bone renewal, but studies have shown that caffeine increases calcium excretion from the body. Does that mean that excessive caffeine can cause osteoporosis? Research has been inconclusive in creating a direct link between caffeine and osteoporosis, perhaps because it is only one of many risk factors associated with brittle bones. If you already have osteoporosis-or there is a strong history of osteoporosis or bone fractures in your family- it is best to reduce caffeine consumption as much as possible to prevent unnecessary bone loss.

When assessing whether caffeine and osteoporosis might be a problem, it is important to see how much caffeine is currently in your diet.

NORTH AMERICANS LOVE THEIR COFFEE!

Canadians have become the largest consumers of coffee in North America. Almost two-thirds of Canadians report that they drink coffee every day... and on average, 4.5 cups a day. In the United States, over 50% of adult Americans drink coffee every day and the average is 3.1 cups of coffee per day.

Experts advise us to limit our coffee to 3 cups (not mugs) a day. But coffee shops have responded to our love of coffee by creating even larger servings. The popular 20 ounce jumbo cups at Starbucks or Second Cup will deliver almost the maximum dose in a single serving.

There is also a significant difference in the caffeine content of various forms of coffee-which is a concern for those interested in caffeine and osteoporosis. So how do the coffee shops compare?

The lowest amounts of caffeine are found in the brands from JAVA Stop and Country Time. There is approximately 25% more caffeine in coffee from Timothy's and Tim Hortons Starbucks and Second Cup have almost double the levels of caffeine in their coffee compared to the lowest levels.

Here is an example of the range of caffeine in a cup of coffee, as reported by the coffee shops themselves.

Starbucks Grande: (16 oz): 320 mg. Einstein Bros. regular coffee (16 oz.): 300 mg. Dunkin' Donuts regular coffee (16 oz.) 206 mg. Tim Hortons medium coffee (14 oz): 140 mg. Tim Hortons medium Icecap: 150 mg

Caffeine and osteoporosis is less of a concern for those who restrict themselves to a single latte or espresso.

Starbucks Vanilla Latte (Grande 16 oz): 150 mg. tarbucks Espresso (Solo 1 oz.): 75 mg.

Decaffeinated coffee is an even better choice for those concerned about caffeine and osteoporosis. It is not just a better choice. It is a GREAT choice.

Starbucks Decaffinated (Grande 16 oz): 16 mg. Tim Hortons Decaffinated (medium 14 oz): 6 mg. Coffee, generic decaffeinated (16 oz.): 10 mg.

Surprisingly, drinking regular instant coffee doesn't reduce caffeine significantly. A 16 ounce mug of generic instant coffee averages 180 mg. of caffeine which is comparable to a medium coffee at Tim Hortons. Tea, on the other hand is a great choice. A medium black tea contains approximately 50 mg. of caffeine, while a chai tea or green tea contains only 20-25 mg. of caffeine.

So what should people concerned about caffeine and osteoporosis do to protect their bones? Decaffeinated coffee is the perfect choice for those who just can't give up their java. And treating yourself to a latte will also help to reduce your caffeine at Starbucks...although a large mug of chai or green tea would be even better.

It is also important to assess the total amount of caffeine you are consuming. If you are drinking soft drinks or energy drinks (which are laced with caffeine) you may be consuming a lot more caffeine than you are getting solely through your coffee. The consumption of soft drinks and energy drinks by teenagers is of particular concern because their bones are growing rapidly during this period and they are creating the foundation that must carry them through the rest of their lives.

So can we still have our java if we are at risk for osteoporosis? It is better to order a Decaf... just to be on the save side.

Calcium Magnesium

When Treating Arthritis, There are Definite Foods to Avoid, and Specific Arthritis Foods to Eat

Foods to Avoid

Calcium Magnesium

You need to make sure that the calcium to phosphorus ratio in any of the foods you eat is as low as possible - this is because excess phosphorus will increase the loss of calcium from the body and worsen the condition. The more phosphorous-containing foods you eat, the more you need to supplement with a good source of calcium.

Calcium Magnesium

Reduce your intake of:

o red meat, red-fleshed fish

o most grains, especially wheat.

Eliminate:

o soft drinks - high in phosphoric acid

o organ meat (liver, kidney), processed meat - especially high in phosphorus

o caffeine - increases the rate of loss of minerals and nutrients

o fried foods and vegetable oil - a high intake of fried foods and omega 6 from vegetable oil can make the inflammation worse

o sugar - results in poor absorption of nutrients

o antacids - neutralize stomach acid and result in poor absorption of calcium (heartburn and indigestion are caused by poor eating habits and NOT ENOUGH stomach acid!)

Important Note: Eliminate the bad fats such as margarine, cooking with too much vegetable oil and fried foods from your diet. A high intake of vegetable oil (a source of Omega 6) needs to be avoided as this will aggravate any inflammation.

Arthritis Foods

The best arthritis foods are diets high in calcium and magnesium and other trace minerals - this will ensure healthy bone and bone matrix structure. Specific nutrients are also required to build bone and bone structure.
Calcium: Non fat milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese, snow peas, soybeans, tofu, sardines, salmon, walnuts and almonds, sunflower seeds, kale and other green leafy vegetables, broccoli, alfalfa seeds - to name a few. Milk isn't a great source of calcium because it has a low magnesium content and you need magnesium to get the calcium into your bones.

Magnesium: Many fruits and vegetables, whole grains, leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, bananas and apricots - all these make great arthritis foods.
Vitamin D: is required to get the calcium into the bones. The best source is the sun - about 10 minutes per day is fine. Other sources include dairy products and fatty fish.

Trace minerals: Boron and Manganese are important to help the body absorb Calcium; the best sources of Boron are green leafy vegetables, apples, almonds pears and legumes. For Manganese, look for ginger and oats as your arthritis foods.

Collagen & Support Tissues: Collagen is part of our bone matrix, the cartilage in our joints and in the fluid that protects and lubricates our joints. It's also part of our skin, hair and the connective tissues of the body.

Arthritis foods containing the following nutrients will provide nutrition for bone support: zinc, copper, selenium and beta-carotene (Vitamin A). Green leafy vegetables and pumpkin seeds are good sources of zinc; selenium may be found in brazil nuts from Brazil (because of the high selenium content in the soil); while Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, berries, red and green peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and spinach. Eggs and meat are good sources of amino acids which form part of the collagen structure.
Essential Fatty Acids - are excellent arthritis foods and are required for the body's natural pain relief and anti-inflammatory responses. They are also part of the protective joint fluid. Best sources are from fish (particularly oily fish such as salmon and mackerel), animal fat and some oils such as flaxseed (for omega 3)and borage oil (for omega 6).

Regarding essential fatty acids, ideally you should consume Omega 6 EFA & Omega 3 EFA at a ratio of 2:1. Most people find it very difficult to get this right (the average ratio in the U.S. and UK is around 10:1) so we suggest you use an EFA Supplement from a quality source.

Final Note on Arthritis Foods

While it is possible to meet some of your dietary requirements from the food you eat, if you are serious about preventing or reversing arthritis, you need to consume these arthritis foods in combination with nutrient supplements.

Also consider that the majority of the food we eat is grown in minerally-depleted soils - so an almond may not contain all the calcium and magnesium it's supposed to have, sad but true!

If you have a busy lifestyle, eat junk food and/or can't get enough fresh food in your daily life, then you should consider supplementing with all 90 essential nutrients including plant derived colloidal minerals and supplements containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fatty acids.

Calcium and magnesium are normally very difficult to absorb from our arthritis foods diet and from supplements, however, calcium liquid supplements containing Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin D and Glucosamine are a good way to supplement your diet.

Supplements that specifically assist with maintenance and repair of the joint such as Glucosamine, are also beneficial. If you suffer pain and inflammation, then CM Cream has been scientifically and medically proven to relieve pain and improve mobility.

The use of a digestive enzyme supplement - will improve the absorption of the good arthritis foods you eat and will maximize the benefit you receive from taking supplements. As we all reach the age of 40, our stomach acid concentration begins to fall and this can lead to complications of existing chronic disease conditions, such arthritis.

Summary

1. Avoid foods high in phosphorus - particularly SOFT DRINKS, processed foods, processed meat and organ meat. No fried foods, cooking oil or margarine - use butter small amounts of extra virgin olive oil.

2. Eliminate caffeine and sugar from your diet and stop taking antacids.

3. Consume food with a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables and eggs. Reduce your intake of red meat and fish.

4. Consider the use of supplements to support and reverse your arthritis, and digestive enzymes to maximise the absorption of the food and of the supplements.

Osteoporosis - Good Calcium Supplements, Vitamin D and Magnesium Can Help

Osteoporosis is considered by many to be a degenerative disease of the bones which leads to easier fractures that only the old suffer from. To understand the cure, you must first understand the disease, and therefore you must first discover the possible causes of osteoporosis. After all, this is what preventive medicine is all about.

Calcium Magnesium

You would be therefore glad to know that osteoporosis can be prevented and you can choose to lead that healthy lifestyle that you've always desired even when you are old.

Calcium Magnesium

What causes Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is the decrease of bone mineral density together with the altering of various minerals and protein structure in our bones. This leads to increased fracture because the bone tissue has weakened within and outside. If you have osteoporosis, you face an increased risk for fractured bones, particularly in the hip, spine, and wrist. It is thus important to know how we can improve our bone architecture.

Synergistic Action of Minerals and Vitamins

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and is needed for strength and structure of teeth and bones, blood clotting, nerve function, muscle contraction and relaxation, enzyme regulation, and membrane permeability.

Most of the calcium in the human body is found in teeth and bones and thus low calcium intake can potentially lead to osteoporosis, as the calcium can be used up and not replenished.

You can find good sources of calcium in broccoli, legumes, fortified orange juice, dairy products, and fish. Many dairy products are also fortified with vitamin D, which plays an important role in calcium absorption.

Another component needed in the formation of healthy bones is vitamin D. Now, many research scientists and doctors have long suspected a link on the effects of the lack of sunlight with the occurrence of osteoporosis.

This is probably because natural sunlight helps to create vitamin D in our skin and eyes, and since vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient essential for bone growth and general health, a lack of it, would actually contribute to osteoporosis. The lack of vitamin D could also lead to an increase in cholesterol levels in your body, and that would be discussed in another article.

Exposing yourself to the sun is the most important source of vitamin D for most of us and you could find some amounts of vitamin D from food, including fortified milk, certain types of fish, and fortified breakfast cereals

The third component needed for healthy bones is Magnesium, which is an essential mineral for many fundamental processes in the body as well. It is primarily stored in bones. Magnesium plays an integral role in hundreds of enzymatic functions and is important for nerve, muscle, and bone health.

Magnesium helps with the absorption of calcium and depends on vitamin D for its own absorption. Food dietary sources of magnesium include spinach, legumes, nuts, and grains.

Basically, the building of good strong bones need a range of minerals and vitamins such as magnesium, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, silicon, vitamin K, (in particular, vitamin K2, which is especially important) and of course calcium. So calcium is always the biggest component in any nutritional supplements for the bone.

Calcium supplements must contain all these vitamins and minerals, because without these essential components, the calcium may not be absorbed in the bones where it is intended, and might end up in our blood vessels or our heart, where it causes harm. So long as these other nutrients are taken as well, many studies have shown that added calcium plays an important role in building and maintaining bone mass.

And so with regard to the recent news on the intake of calcium supplements leading to heart attacks, the question that needs to be asked would be, were all these minerals and vitamins in synchronisation with each other? Therefore the main take away from that research is that calcium supplements are not magic bullets and should not be taken in isolation. There should be equally good multi-vitamins and minerals to complement it.

If you are still convinced by the news and intend to skip your calcium supplements, there are alternatives such as embarking on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or by taking bisphophonate drugs like Fosomax. All drugs have side effects, and that is why I opine that it is better to be safe and consume optimum and good calcium supplements than to risk it and end up having to ingest drugs made by all these pharmaceutical companies.

Summary

So, since you now know that magnesium, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin K and calcium work hand in hand together, in great synergy to promote strong and healthy bones, you must therefore chose an optimum calcium supplement with these carefully formulated ingredients. You should find one that has been manufactured to U.S.P. guidelines for guaranteed purity and potency, so that what you see on the label is what you would eat.

Include your daily calcium supplements with an essential mix of multi-vitamins, and you would be provided with a complete nutritional support for optimal bone development and maintenance throughout your life.

Do Calcium Supplements Have Side Effects?

Calcium, what is it? Why is it needed by the body? Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and has a lot of important functions. 99% of calcium is to be found in the bones and teeth while the remaining 1% is found throughout the body in our muscles, blood and the fluid between the cells.

Calcium Magnesium

Calcium has many functions in our body. Calcium is important because it supports the structure of the bones and teeth, it is used for muscle contraction, it is used for sending messages through the nervous system and the secretion of hormones and enzymes. A constant level of calcium is also used to maintain a level in body fluid and tissues in order for vital body processes to function efficiently.

Calcium Magnesium

As we know see, calcium is very important in our bodies that there is a need to maintain our intake of calcium and we are usually advice to take in calcium supplements. But the question is, do these calcium supplements have side effects?

According to British Medical Journal which published a study by the University of Auckland New Zealand the answer may be a yes. The study which focused on assessing the effects of calcium supplements on healthy postmenopausal women's risk on cardiovascular events, took a randomized placebo controlled trial that involved 1,471 postmenopausal women that had an average age of 74 years old. The trial was conducted over a period of five years.

732 women took calcium citrate in a 400 mg dose before breakfast and a 600 mg dose in the evening. Then 739 women took placebo. They were evaluated every 6 months. And you know what happened? You know what they found out? 21 women in the calcium group and 10 women in the placebo group experienced a heart attack .The calcium group had a 47% higher incidence of heart attack, stroke or sudden death.

The researchers concluded that calcium supplementation in healthy postmenopausal women increases cardiovascular event rates. The researchers concluded that before calcium supplementation should be broadly advocated, these new findings should be first considered carefully.

Add to that, the AJCN also published a study that was conducted by University Hospital Zürich that according to them found no protective association between hip fractures and a 555mg per day intake of calcium. Their study involved a randomized controlled study of over 5600 women 58 years older and they found out that calcium supplementation may increase the risk for hip fracture by 64%.

Their research recommended that our calcium intake may be too high, our vitamin D intake too low. Because of these high intake, we may be experiencing a calcium overdose.

Looks like we really need to have a second look on our calcium intake. Have a nice day everyone!

Food And Drink To Stop Kidney Stones - Part 2 - Calcium And Magnesium Work Together

A Natural Remedy For Kidney Stones

Calcium Magnesium

This is the second in a series of scholarly articles on kidney stones. In these articles I tell you about a vegetable home remedy for kidney stones, using a diet to prevent calcium oxalate stones, and all other kinds as well. I am going to tell you about home treatment for kidney stone pain, and home remedies for passing a kidney stone. In these articles, you are going to learn about a natural remedy to kidney stones.

Calcium Magnesium

Eat This And You Won't Have To Bother Knowing Any Details About Nutrition

Twice each day, if you eat cooked whole grain plus beans, in approximately equal amounts...

...and if you have, along with them, some green vegetable, then you ought to stay free from any serious diseases, including kidney stones.

That kind of meal gives you your calcium and your magnesium in a good ratio; plus you also get a perfect balance of all 28 of your essential amino acids, as a bonus.

Besides all that, if you parch the grain at 475 degrees before boiling it, the starches will be converted, so that they will be of maximum benefit to you, instead of being somewhat of a hindrance.

Daniel Knew

You remember Daniel, of course. The top Babylonian wanted to give to Daniel and his fellows a share of the meat and wine from his meal. But Daniel said, "Let us eat only pulse and water for 2 weeks, then see if we don't look better than your people do." So he did, and they did, and they did look better.

What Is "Pulse"

Pulse means split peas and lentils, basically. It is great to get a big variety of beans, but pulse can be cooked faster, and may be also more easily digested than, say, pinto beans or navy beans. But if you cook them extra there may not be such a difference.

It so happens that split peas are known to be a good source of both calcium and magnesium.

Now Let Me Explain About The Beans And the Grain

Not only the beans, but the grains and the greens!

Calcium and magnesium have to work together. If you eat too little of one, it is just as if you ate too much of the other.

Or vice-versa (excuse my Roman), if you eat enough of one, but too much of the other...

...then it is the same as if you didn't eat enough of the first one. In other words, it's not so important as to how much of calcium or magnesium that you eat, but that they should be in a good ratio to each other. A nutritious diet will give you enough of both, without having to painstakingly count and measure.

Here are some facts to illustrate:

Women with menstrual cramps have often been found to be on a high-dairy and low-grains diet. That means too much calcium, too little magnesium. Put them on grains and beans, and voila, no cramps!

With too little magnesium in your diet you may have symptoms 1) cramp in your calf, and/or 2) soreness after mild exercise, and/or 3) craving chocolate. But check it out, even with a good supply of magnesium in your food, if you eat too much calcium, you get the same symptoms. Because too much calcium is like too little magnesium. And vice versa (excuse my Roman).

Some Foods Contain Both Calcium And Magnesium

Here is the list:

Nuts and seeds

Greens (magnesium is in chlorophyll, and green plants all have chlorophyll). This would include seaweed.

Fish (but all fish are contaminated until we get rid of the "New World Order")

Apricots, prunes

Beans: split peas, tofu, lima, red kidney, black turtle, navy, white, lima, soy

Calcium is in these foods:

Dairy produce

Lemons

Rhubarb

Cauliflower

Gelatin

Magnesium is in these foods:

Whole grains

Legumes, tofu

Wheat germ

Apples, pears

Honey

What Causes You To Need Extra Magnesium

If you were to eat refined sugar, or if you were to consume alcohol, they would increase the excretion of your bodily magnesium. Then you would need to consume more magnesium.

Additional Benefits Of Calcium And Magnesium In Your Food

Magnesium and calcium each helps to prevent constipation. Magnesium is a gentle laxative. It relaxes the walls of your colon. By normalizing the muscular tension in your colon, magnesium brings normal peristalsis ("peristalsis" means "squeezing" motion).

Magnesium, in your gastrointestinal tract, attracts water, it brings more water into your colon. The water softens your turds & increases absorption of water into your blood's stream, if you need it.

Calcium in your food, upon reaching your colon, combines with surplus bile and with decaying fat. The combination creates a soluble soap that you shit out.

Magnesium, in your food, along with calcium, prevents arthritis and osteoporosis.

What Should You Therefore Do?

Go. Go and eat some greens. Eat them now.

Lose Weight By Eating Ice Cream

Hot new research reveals that ice cream, when eaten as part of a healthy diet, may actually melt away fat, helping you lose weight quicker than if you abstained! Plus a dish a day helps you get healthier in other ways according to Marsha Hudnall's book, THE ICE CREAM DIET.

Calcium Magnesium

But before you head out for a couple of gallons of Ben and Jerry's remember that too much can find it's way to the hips, belly and other unwanted places.

Calcium Magnesium

One of the key benefits of ice cream is that it may satisfy your cravings better than any other food. "When we tell ourselves we can't have something, we immediately focus our attention on what's forbidden, which increases our desire and chances of losing control," says Marsha Hudnall, RD, of Green Mountain at Fox Run, a "non-diet" weight control spa.

A key benefit of ice cream is the calcium it provides. Only 4% of women over 50 meet the daily 1,200 mg goal. The average female calcium intake is only 652 mg. Less than one third of men reach these same goals.

Calcium is also ice cream's "secret" slim down ingredient. In a recent study, overweight people who took a calcium supplement lost 38% more body fat than those who ate the same reduced-calorie diet without the supplement.

How does calcium help you lose? A diet low in calcium shuts down your body's fat burning ability, say experts. When your body doesn't get enough calcium, it triggers fat cells to store fat and get bigger.

So, how much ice cream is "reasonable?" The guideline is a one-half cup serving of no more than 125 calories. My personal favorite is Bryers No Sugar Added Vanilla. It has only 120 calories per 1/2 cup and the flavor reminds me of the "good old days" when we took turns cranking the six quart ice cream freezer full of moms special recipe. Ummm good.
