Calcium is an important constituent of most soils and the minerals found in soil are mostly compounds of calcium with other substances. Soil calcium is necessary for proper plant functions and helps in producing healthy fruits and flowers.
Some of the functions that require soil calcium include enzyme activity for the absorption of other nutrients, proper cell formation and division, increased metabolic activities, starch breakdown and nitrate uptake. Without soil calcium plants tend to lose their color, have a short life and produce little or no fruit.
Calcium Magnesium
Many fertilizers available today make use of calcium and calcium-rich salts to neutralize soils and make them less acidic. Calcium has strong relationships with other substances found in the soil like magnesium, potassium and sodium. Together these nutrients make the soil so rich that almost all kinds of plants can be grown with it.
Soil calcium is mainly important for lowering the pH level and the associated acidity. It is often recommended to include up to 40 - 50% of calcium in any fertilizer to account for its deficiency in the soil. The resulting plants will have stronger roots and better growth rate than a calcium deficient soil. In addition to this, calcium also helps in regulating the flow of water and air in the soil for proper absorption by the plant cells.
In order to use all available nutrients efficiently, plants need phosphorus and micronutrients in the soil. These substances are transported with water through all parts of the plant and help in developing healthy leaves and roots. Soil calcium also helps in reducing the need for nitrogen. Nitrogen is important for decomposition of organic matter.
The most widely-known calcium compound is calcium sulfate or gypsum. Gypsum helps in increasing calcium content in the soil and protects plants and trees from harsh winter weather. Calcium in the soil is often increased by feeding it with limestone.
People eat green leafy vegetables to increase their blood calcium level. However, some vegetables might be a victim of calcium deficiency and may not provide adequate amount of calcium that you require. Some indications of calcium deficiency include tip-burn on lettuce and blossom-end rot in tomatoes.
If fresh vegetables are not available in your area you can always choose high-quality calcium supplements as an alternative. The supplement products made with coral calcium are the most efficient and safe to be used by people of all ages.
