What's All the Buzz About Magnesium Oil?

There's been a fair amount of talk on the Internet recently about a new "miracle" product that cures many of today's biggest health problems. The product, oddly enough, is termed "magnesium oil". But you don't drink it, or put it on food. You rub it onto your skin. Among others things, it's supposed to prevent heart disease, lower your blood pressure and cure migraines.

Calcium Magnesium

So, what's so good about magnesium oil? After all, aren't there enough natural supplements and vitamins in the world already?

Calcium Magnesium

Well, being something of a natural health nut, I decided to take a closer look to see what it's all about. Here's what I found:

Studies show that 80% of all Americans are magnesium deficient. Wow, 80 percent.

It turns out that with all the talk of antioxidants, omega 3 and calcium, the media may have overlooked the real "missing link" in our diets. Evidently, the mineral magnesium is present in practically every cell in our bodies. Our cells depend on it for the most basic important functions. When we get low, bad things occur. Dr. Lawrence Resnick, MD, of Cornell University, a leading researcher on the mineral, stated: "Without enough magnesium, cells simply don't work."

It seems that quite a large body of research on magnesium has been performed over the years. And the results of the studies are so compelling that it makes you wonder why we haven't heard about it earlier. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, migraines, diabetes, depression, fatigue, insomnia and many other conditions.

Many doctors and researchers are now going beyond saying that magnesium deficiency is "linked" to these illnesses and are saying that it is the actual "cause" of the disease, which is a big step upward.

Here's a shocking quote by Dr. Mildred S Seelig, MD: "Most modern heart disease is caused by magnesium deficiency. A vast and convincing body of research, largely ignored, has convinced us and many colleagues of this fact." Coming from a doctor of solid reputation, that's a pretty strong statement.

Okay, so it's clear that we need magnesium in our diets or bad things happen to us. No problem, we can just get it from food and water, right? Well, that presents a surprising dilemma.

In the year 1900, magnesium was plentiful in our food and water. But today, our drinking water is stripped of minerals by our filtration plants. Also, vegetables and meats are much lower in this vital mineral due to modern large-scale farming techniques, which have depleted the soils.

In fact, magnesium in our food and water is only half of what it used to be a hundred years ago. By the way, it turns out that heart disease was practically non-existent 100 years ago, when magnesium levels in food and water was higher. Back then, there were no doctors specializing in heart disease, because almost nobody had the malady.

Well surely there must be some foods we can still eat that are good sources of magnesium, right? The answer to this is yes, if you want to eat a mountain of pumpkins seeds and spinach EVERY DAY. But most people simply won't do this.

By now I'm beginning to realize that I'll have to get my daily magnesium through supplements, since getting it in food and water has become impractical.

And as I turn my attention to finding a good supplement, I get another surprise: All magnesium supplements taken by the mouth (orally) are only absorbed at about a 20% level, with the rest passing through us. Our intestines simply don't absorb the magnesium: powders, tablets, drinks, any of them.

To make matters worse, if you try to compensate for this low absorption by taking larger doses of magnesium supplements, you get diarrhea. I tried doing this and it's true, you get diarrhea.

This is when the sheer magnitude of the problem dawned on me: 80% of us are magnesium deficient; we can't get enough from our food and water; the supplements we take don't get absorbed; and to top it all off, almost nobody in the media is talking about the dangers of magnesium deficiency - heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, etc.

Because this is so important, I re-doubled my efforts. There just had to be a supplement out there that would work. That's when I came across magnesium oil.

Magnesium oil seems to be different than all the other supplements out there, because it's absorbed through the skin. You rub it onto your arms and legs like a lotion. They say it works using the same principle as the transdermal nicotine patches sold in the drug stores.

Although it's termed "magnesium oil" it's not really an oil after all. It's a super-saturated solution of magnesium chloride in a water base. When you rub in onto the skin it feels a little slippery, but then it dries in seconds and no longer feels oily.

Evidently a doctor by the name of Norman Shealy MD, did a trial with patients using the magnesium oil and found that it was highly absorbable without any side effects such as diarrhea. They used a regimen of spraying the oil on the skin in conjunction with a daily footbath. The results showed that his patients raised their cellular magnesium levels to the top of the reference scale in a remarkable 6 weeks. Normally, with orally taken supplements, this can take 2 years or longer.

I've personally been using the magnesium chloride oil myself for several months now and my observation is that it's the real deal. Although I consider myself healthy, it has eliminated a few nagging problems I had: runner's knee and migraines. These symptoms are gone now. I also feel like I never get tired anymore. I can work as hard as I want and still not feel run down.

So in conclusion, I guess all the "buzz" about magnesium oil is well founded. It appears to solve a huge problem. Magnesium deficiency is a serious health problem the world is facing right now and the sad part is that the media has yet to catch on.

Coral Calcium May Help In Curing Up To A Hundred Diseases

Coral Calcium

Calcium Magnesium

The discoverer of Coral Calcium was Dr. Robert barefoot. His belief was that the reason why the Okinawans from Japan lived longer was that their drinking water was rich in coral reef substances surrounding their area. He further said that it would neutralize the toxic acidity of the body as coral calcium is alkaline based.

Calcium Magnesium

The coral calcium infomercial maintains that intake of coral calcium may help in curing up to 200 human diseases. However Dr. Barefoot's claims have no evidence to prove them nor is there any evidence to prove that alkalizing our bodies may cure cancer. The danger involved in consumption of coral calcium is that coral reef is protected by international law that means the coral calcium available for consumption is fossilized coral calcium coming from industrial waste.

Coral calcium consists of primarily calcium carbonate that you can find in any calcium supplements. The FDC (federal trade commission) in 2003 had charged the marketers of Coral Calcium Supreme of making unsubstantiated claims about its health benefits.

Claimed evidence of Coral Calcium's Benefits by Barefoot
In his book The Calcium Factor Barefoot claims that there are hundreds of articles in journals to support his argument. However it has been observed that the mentioned articles are just from magazines and not from any journals that scientifically acclaimed.

Coral Calcium may benefit you in various way depending upon how your body reacts to it.

1) Increase in lifespan

2) a healthier life

3) Coral calcium gets 100% absorbed in the body as compared to 1% absorption of calcium containing antacids.

4) Helps in revitalization of cells for promoting health.

5) Helps in fighting over 200 diseases.

Cautions against Consumption of excess Calcium

o Laboratory analyses have identified the presence of too many heavy metals in coral calcium including lead. The presence of too many heavy metals in the body can lead to toxicity and death.

o Coral calcium can cause excessive allergies in people allergic to shellfish.

o A normal calcium supplement is much cheaper and safer than a purified calcium carbonate supplement.

o As mentioned above coral calcium marketers claim 100% absorption rate but in fact only 30-35% is absorbed in the body.

o Manufacturing of coral calcium through coral reefs is against the international law and is destroying natural beauty.

usage

If you are really hell bent on trying coral calcium then Barefoot says that a normal person should take 3 capsules a day. However people sick with abnormal salivary ph should take 6-9 capsules a day.

However if you are concerned about your heart health then look at your omega 3 fatty acids, and fish oils instead of coral calcium. As for the cancer risk you need to look at your antioxidants and vegetables not coral calcium.

Dolomite Lime - Why Liming Your Soil Is Bad For Your Garden

Dolomite lime is used everywhere. I've got to give credit to the dolomite lime industry. They've done a tremendous marketing job convincing us that we need to put this stuff on our lawns and gardens every year.

Calcium Magnesium

A search through conventional and organic gardening websites and books reveals that most garden experts happily pass on this information.

Calcium Magnesium

Occasionally, using dolomite lime is warranted, but the truth is, it often makes things worse, sometimes just a little, and sometimes a lot. Let's look at why...

What Is Dolomite Lime?

Dolomite lime is a rock. It can be quite pretty. It is calcium magnesium carbonate, CaMg(CO3)2. It has about 50% calcium carbonate and 40% magnesium carbonate, giving approximately 22% calcium and at least 11% magnesium.

When you buy it for your garden, it has been ground into granules that can be course or very fine, or it could be turned into a prill.

Now, dolomite lime is even allowed in organic gardening. It is not inherently bad, but how it is used in the garden is usually mildly to severely detrimental.

Why Are We Told To Use Dolomite Lime?

I have touched on this before when I talked about pH. The idea is that minerals in your soil are continuously being leached by rain and consequently your soil is always moving towards more acidic.

Dolomite lime is used to counteract this, to "sweeten" the soil. It can do that, but that doesn't mean it's good.

Why Are Minerals Leaching From Your Soil?

Minerals may or may not be leaching from your soil. If they are, it could be partially because of rain, but there are other reasons, too.

If your soil is low in organic matter, which is generally the case, it probably can't hold onto minerals very well, especially if it is low in clay and high in sand and silt. If you have lots of clay, you probably don't have much to worry about.

Chemical fertilizers cause acidity, so if you use them, that is part of the problem, too. Dolomite lime is not the answer. Organic gardening is. Let's look at why dolomite is probably not what you want.

Here's The Important Part

The main point I want to make is that even if minerals are leaching from your soil, it doesn't make sense to blindly go back adding just two of them (the calcium and magnesium in dolomite lime) without knowing you need them. You might already have enough or too much of one or both of them. We need to think a little more than that when organic gardening.

Your soil needs a calcium:magnesium of somewhere between 7:1 (sandier soils) and 10:1 (clayier soils). Outside of this range, your soil will have water problems, your plants will have health problems and insect and disease problems, and you will have weed problems.

One of your most important goals in the garden is to add specific mineral fertilizers to move the calcium to magnesium ratio towards this range. As a side note, I understand it may seem strange to some that we should have to do this, but our soils are way out of balance and we're trying to grow things that wouldn't naturally grow there, so we have to do this.

The problem with dolomite lime? It has a calcium:magnesium ratio of 2:1. That's way too much magnesium for most soils. Magnesium is certainly an essential mineral. Too much of it, however, causes many problems, compaction being one of the most common, but also pest and weed problems.

So if you add this to your lawn every year, chances are you're just causing more compaction and weed problems.

When Should You Use Dolomite Lime?

You should only use dolomite lime when you have a soil test showing a huge deficiency of magnesium in your soil.

Even then, calcitic lime (calcium carbonate) is generally the way to go because it has a small amount of magnesium and often a calcium:magnesium ratio of about 10:1, with a calcium content 34% to 40% or more.

I use calcitic lime regularly in my organic gardening, but even then, only when I need it. A soil test is the main way to find out if you need it.

Choosing The Best Calcium Supplement For You - 5 Helpful Tips You Need To Know

Consumers often ask: How do I know the best calcium supplement to take? The simple answer to the question is that the best supplement is the one that helps you achieve your goal for taking it. Determining that one, however, can be confusing, even to medical professionals. There are too many brands to choose from, and all of them claim to be equally good for you. But, knowing what to look for can help you make better choices.

Calcium Magnesium

First, take a few minutes to read the "supplement facts" label. On it, you will find the dose for the supplement, amount per serving, and percent daily value. Percent daily value is simply the percent of the daily value provided by one dose. Take note of the calcium compound used to make the supplement; you'll need it in step 2.

Calcium Magnesium

Step 2 is to determine the calcium content (a.k.a. elemental calcium) of the supplement per serving. Different calcium compounds have different elemental calcium. For example, calcium carbonate contains 40% elemental calcium; dicalcium phosphate is 38% elemental calcium; calcium citrate contains 21% elemental calcium; calcium lactate is 13% calcium and calcium gluconate is 9% calcium. What this means is that if you take 500 mg of a supplement with 40% elemental calcium, for instance, you will get 200 mg of calcium. By contrast, you will have to take at least 950 mg of a supplement with 21% elemental calcium in order to get the same amount of calcium.

Now that you know the elemental calcium, consider how well the supplement dissolves. This is what sets apart good calcium supplements from bad ones. If the supplement does not dissolve well in your stomach, you are unlikely to get maximum benefit from it. To test how well it dissolves, place a pill in a cup containing warm water. Let it sit for 30 minutes while stirring occasionally. If it does not dissolve well after 30 minutes, it is unlikely to dissolve well in your stomach.

While the ability to dissolve defines a good calcium supplement, absorbability determines the best calcium supplement for each individual. The supplement is of little value to you if your body cannot absorb it. Side effects like constipation, gas, and stomach upset are telltale signs of poor calcium absorption. If you develop these side effects from your supplement, try taking it in doses of 500 mg or less and with vitamin D. Such steps can improve its absorption. In general, most people absorb calcium carbonate well if they take it with food. But, calcium citrate is often recommended for those with digestive or absorption problems, and they can take it any time.

Finally, consider the purity of the supplement. Choose supplements that have the abbreviation USP on the label. USP, which stands for United States Pharmacopeia, is a government agency that sets quality standards for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, and other healthcare products manufactured and sold in the United States. Avoid calcium from unrefined oyster shell, bone meal, or dolomite without the USP symbol; they may contain high levels of lead or other toxic metals.

Anyone looking for a calcium supplement can easily find one in the stores; picking out the right one for you is a different story. So, before you buy, read the "supplement facts" label carefully. Determine the calcium compound used in the supplement and its calcium content. Test how well it dissolves. Choose supplements with the USP abbreviation on their labels. If you develop side effects from your supplement, try a different brand or formulation, or talk with your doctor.

Eggshell Calcium Human Diet - The Connection amid Eggshell Calcium and Human Diet

Calcium is found abundantly in the human body and the earth's crust. It is also a major constituent of animal and plant diets. Eggshell contains adequate amounts of calcium carbonate which is used as a source of calcium in many calcium supplements today. Let's find out what the connection between eggshell calcium and human diet is.

Calcium Magnesium

Eggshell calcium and human diet are connected because of the fact that eggshell is consumed to overcome calcium deficiency in people of all ages. Although it's not an option for vegetarians, they can also get enough calcium to fulfill their daily needs by adding an egg substitute to their diet.

Calcium Magnesium

Many people are found arguing that eggshell is not clean and it should not be consumed to receive calcium carbonate. But the fact is eggshell is one of the richest sources of calcium carbonate and it cannot be ignored just like that. Of course when it comes to purity and hygiene, you should wash the shell thoroughly and then grind it finely to mix with other substances for consumption.

Calcium carbonate occurs as calcite in eggshells. Eggshell calcium and human diet are also related by the fact that many calcium supplements are now being made which make use of eggshell as their main ingredient. These supplements and other calcium tablets available on the market are very effective in controlling calcium deficiency and making the bones stronger and healthier.

Eggshell or calcium carbonate obtained from other sources can be blended with magnesium and vitamin D to make very beneficial calcium supplements. Magnesium is also an important mineral and should be added to everyday human diet. Similarly, vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium and is needed by all of us on a daily basis.

Coral calcium is another widely used source of calcium carbonate in calcium tablets. This calcium source is obtained from fossilized coral reefs above sea level and has many benefits to offer. It contains not only large quantities of calcium carbonate but also traces of many other minerals and nutrients good for health. Supplements made with coral calcium, especially marine grade coral calcium, are equally effective as those made with eggshell calcium carbonate.

We all should consume up to 1000-1200 mg of calcium on a daily basis. To fulfill this requirement, a rich calcium diet along with good-quality calcium supplements is required. Don't forget to exercise regularly to receive maximum benefits of any calcium supplement product.
