How Your Headache Can Be Helped With Magnesium

Many doctors are beginning to think that a large percentage of severe migraines are brought on by an imbalance of important minerals like magnesium and calcium. 50-60% of migraines are linked to a magnesium deficiency and that is why many medications aren't successful in treating all headaches. They are missing one of the key causes - the mineral imbalance.

Calcium Magnesium

This magnesium 'missing link' isn't yet, commonly agreed on by experts, but evidence is growing for its use in the treatment of migraines.

Calcium Magnesium

So how can magnesium help? We need to look at what causes a migraine. It's believed that migraines are caused by changes in the blood vessels. These changes can be triggered by muscle contractions due to stress and chemicals called serotonin and catecholamines in the blood.

Too much serotonin can make the blood flow slow down and too little can make it move too quickly. This has been understood for a long time but stopping these changes has been less successful. If there is not enough magnesium in the body, the serotonin flows fast and constricts blood vessels as well as releasing chemicals that produce pain.

Normal magnesium levels can stop the release of these pain-making substances. Studies have shown that most people don't get anywhere near their recommended daily dose of magnesium which is 400 mg. Each day, 30 - 40% of Americans get less than 75% of their recommended intake. That can really mount up to a deficiency over time.

Cut your losses

Magnesium is also very easily lost from our bodies. What takes it from us?

2 cups of coffee a day Asthma medications Diuretics Some cardiovascular medications Stress

50 - 60% of migraine patients are thought to have a magnesium deficiency. The good news is that once they start to take supplements, 85 - 90% may often find immediate relief.

The recommended dose is:

two 500 mg magnesium gluconate tablets at lunch time two in the afternoon two at bedtime

Magnesium gluconate is recommended as it is a more active form of magnesium.

IMPORTANT NOTE

If you decide to try this therapy, don't start it without seeing your doctor. These doses are very high and your doctor may want to monitor you as you take it. Anyone taking these dosages does so entirely at their own risk. Anyone with kidney or heart problems must not take magnesium supplements unless it is with medical supervision.

You need calcium too...

If you are thinking of starting magnesium supplements, you will also need to take calcium. High levels of magnesium won't stop your migraines if your calcium level is low.

It is important to take just the recommended daily dose of calcium. If you take too much, the body excretes the excess and takes magnesium with it - so now your calcium is ok but your magnesium is low again.

If you are going to take magnesium and calcium, take them at different times of the day, as the calcium can prevent the body absorbing the magnesium.
